"Scams and frauds are truly some of the lowest forms of exploitive crime, namely because their effectiveness is based on playing off the victim’s emotions." https://www.idtheftcenter.org/scams-targeting-the-elderly.html This is the story of Lorina Aboulmouna's obsession with getting a lower -- and even lower -- price on a used car by playing off the emotions of a vulnerable American retiree.
"Older American citizens are most likely to have a "nest egg," own their home and/or have excellent credit all of which the con-man will try to tap into. Fraudsters are very familiar with the old saying, "you can't get blood from a stone."" (Dennis M. Lormel, Chief, Financial Crimes Section, FBI, Federal Bureau of Investigation, https://archives.fbi.gov/archives/news/testimony/fraud-against-the-elderly) So when Lorina wanted to buy a car, she sought out an elderly man who walked with the assistance of a cane. Even though his car was priced slightly below blue book, she wanted to have it for less -- and less.
PLAYING OFF THE VICTIM'S EMOTIONS
She brought along her partner, Moufid, who suggested that this old man make a "gift" to a recent graduate. "Individuals who grew up in the 30's, 40's and 50's were generally raised to be polite and trusting. Two very important and positive personality traits, except when it comes to dealing with a con-man. The con-man will exploit these traits knowing that it is difficult or impossible for these individuals to say "no"". (Dennis M. Lormel, Chief, Financial Crimes Section, FBI, Federal Bureau of Investigation, https://archives.fbi.gov/archives/news/testimony/fraud-against-the-elderly)
Lorina's argument for cheating the old man was that she would be paying with her own money, that she had to work for. And that it would be better for the old man to take a loss, than that she would have to work honestly to pay the fair market value.
AND SHE GOT AWAY WITH IT
"Older Americans are less likely to report a fraud because they either don't know who to report it to or are too ashamed at having been scammed." (Dennis M. Lormel, Chief, Financial Crimes Section, FBI, Federal Bureau of Investigation, https://archives.fbi.gov/archives/news/testimony/fraud-against-the-elderly)
LOW-DOWN FORM OF EXPLOITATION
Well who cares if Lorina would have to work?? But Moufid and Lorina kept on and on, and wore the old man down, taking his car for hundreds of dollars less than it was worth. "The losses inflicted by these unscrupulous con-men and their organizations are both financially and emotionally devastating to these victims."
